Ward 1 Update: Controlling the rat population, more summer events announced - Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Last year, the number of 311 requests for rodent abatement increased by 65 percent from 2,300 in 2015 to more than 3,500 in 2016. Though there has been an increase in the number of rodents in the city, projects like the Commercial Waste Compactor Grant through the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) which offers up to $13,500 to small businesses for the purchase of a waste compactor, is one of the District’s preventative strategies for rodents.
There are several ways residents can help prevent rodents from nesting on or near their properties, and remember, you can always reach out to my office if you have questions or need help:
  • Store garbage in metal or heavy plastic containers with tight-fitting lids and place trash outside shortly before pickup, instead of days in advance.
  • Remove uneaten pet food and store pet food in secure containers.
  • Report rodents upon sight, any overflowing or uncollected trash, and any overgrown grass/weeds and illegally dumped debris where rats can nest immediately to 311 via the mobile app, the 311 call center, or 311.dc.gov to have these violations enforced.
  • Have a persistent issue? Please reach out to my team so we can work to eliminate the problem.
