Statement Regarding RFK Stadium Deal

Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau, D-Ward 1, issued the following statement in response to the announced stadium deal at the site of the old RFK Stadium.

“I’m proud of the Washington Commanders and could not be more thrilled to see Josh Harris and the new team leadership take them in a positive direction.

“But when it comes to a stadium at RFK, it’s a ‘no’ for me. The District cannot afford to spend $1 billion in taxpayer money on a sports stadium for a privately held team, a stadium that will sit dark most days.

“That’s $1 billion that could be invested in schools, libraries, housing, parks and recreation centers, and other amenities across the District—the things that make D.C. the vibrant place we love to call home.

“This is not the right investment for our city.”

The Council is keenly aware of the problem: next year we’ll face a “fiscal cliff” – a significant gap between what we bring in and what we need to spend. And I’m afraid it’ll keep happening unless we make changes to the way we raise revenue.
It’s no wonder the big beverage industry doesn’t want this bill. They don’t want to pay for the cost to clean up the mess they create.
