Nadeau pushes back against ride fare scare tactics

STATEMENT

In response to an email sent by Uber to its customers on Tuesday saying that Councilmember Nadeau’s proposed B26-0818 – For-Hire Passenger Service Reform Act of 2026 would raise the cost of trips, the Councilmember issued the following statement:

“Uber is still working from its 2012 playbook of fear mongering and propaganda, saying they can’t afford to protect their drivers and passengers, all while their CEO makes $35 million a year. This time the Council is not rolling over.

“As anyone who takes ride-hailing in DC and elsewhere knows, the cost of trips has already been jacked up by surge pricing and other opaque algorithms. This bill includes price transparency and other protections to bring down those costs and keep more money in driver’s pockets.

“If fares go up, the legislation isn’t the problem; rather it’s the business model that boosts profits at the expense of drivers and customers. Even after all this time, Uber still seems to think it shouldn’t be held accountable in the way that other industries are.”
