WARD 1 UPDATE
Hello Neighbors:
DDOT is installing bus and bike lanes and new bus platforms along Columbia Road from 16th Street to Connecticut Ave. The project improves bus service on one of the busiest stretches of road in the District. It will make clearer for all road users who should be where and enhance safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. A new bus lane eastbound from 17th St. to 16th St. will speed bus travel through one of the slowest stretches of bus service in DC.

And this just in: DDOT says they have completed all of the concrete work (bus platforms, curb extensions, islands) and will begin resurfacing from 18th to 16th starting Monday. There will be no resurfacing on weekends or Halloween night.

Protecting our private health data
As a woman, and as the mother of two girls who will become teenagers and young women before I can blink an eye – I am terrified, to be honest, by the possibility that the most personal of information about me and my children could become fodder for marketers, insurance companies, and even the government. I am worried for the tens of thousands of others in the District who face the same invasion of privacy – many of whom will not even know it is happening until it is too late.
D.C. Attorney General Schwalb is making great efforts to strengthen privacy rights for District residents, and recently introduced the Consumer Health Information Privacy Protection Act of 2024, or CHIPPA, which will expand data privacy provisions to apps that collect and sell our private health data. I support this measure. Read more.
Supporting the educators who support our kids
Last week, the Council unanimously passed legislation to set pay scales for early childhood educators that reflect a decrease in funding for the pay equity program in the FY25 budget after a significant increase the year before. We as a Council had to find a way to restore as much as we possibly could after the Mayor decimated the Pay Equity Fund, and then ask a few people in the program to wait a little longer. This is not where we thought we would be; it’s where we are.
This Council has been shoulder-to-shoulder on this issue. We need our Mayor to be shoulder-to-shoulder with us and with the mostly- Black and Brown women, who show up to work every day to ensure that our workforce, myself included, can go to work and to ensure we can have the deep bench of early childhood educators that we need, and to retain the excellent ones, so our children come to school ready to learn when they are in pre-K3. Community Input in the New DCPS Middle School
Have your say about the vision of the new DCPS middle school at 800 Euclid St NW. The school will open in August 2028 and serve students in grades 6-8 as the feeder middle school for Cleveland ES, Garrison ES, and Seaton ES.
The survey will remain open until November 12 at 11:59 pm.

Thanks Councilmember Matt Frumin for taking a walk in the park with me this month to discuss exciting Ward 1 renovation projects that I helped fund in the FY25 budget: Hobart Twins & KC Lewis. I look forward to working with Councilmember Frumin in his role as Recreation & Community Affairs Subcommittee Chair.
Lady Bird Johnson joined the community for Hobart Place parks dedication in 1968. The family that donated the land for the pocket parks made the gift in honor of the First Lady’s efforts to make D.C. more livable. Thanks to Josh Gibson, the voice behind @councilofdc, for finding these great photos!
I enjoyed my visit to Meridian PCS this month to meet with school administrators and tour their wonderful school community. This year, Meridian celebrates its 25th anniversary of inspiring a passion for learning in its students and it was great to see that spirit in action.
I celebrated Manna Inc’s work to sustain affordable housing with Councilmember Zachary Parker, Carrie Stoltzfus of Food and Friends, LISC DC staff, Manna CEO Sasha-Gaye Angus, and many others.
I had some great conversations this weekend at the EmpowerEd gathering on flexible scheduling and community schools with wraparound services. I caught up with State Board of Education Representative Frazier O’Leary and Councilmember Allen, as well as Ward 1 leader Mark Simon and the Washington Teachers Union.
