It has been a very busy two weeks when it comes to legislation, as often happens as the Council is getting ready to go into summer recess.
At this point in the budget cycle, I typically would be updating you on the changes to the budget since my initial overview last week.
We are heading toward the finish line on the District budget for the fiscal year that starts October 1. A lot of really positive things have come out of the process so far – for Ward 1 and for the District as a whole.
As we prepare for budget season here at the Council, I’ve sent Mayor Bowser my budget priorities and recommendations for Ward 1.
February has kept us busy with annual agency performance oversight hearings. The Committee on Public Works and Operations, which I chair, has held hearings for 23 agencies. Performance oversight hearings are the Council’s way of reviewing D.C. government agencies to learn what challenges we are facing and ensure we are achieving progress toward our goals. It is also a time for us to hear from residents about where they see agencies doing good work or in need of improvement or changes.
It’s the start of a new year, a new Council Period, and a new four-year term representing Ward 1 (thank you for your confidence in me!). I was thrilled to be sworn in on Jan. 2 with my family and my Council staff sharing the stage with me. I spoke about what makes Ward 1 great, and a few of the highlights of what we’ve accomplished together.
With the end of Council Period 24 come some big and not-so-big changes.
I hope it's been a great summer so far! Late summer is a slow time for some, but there's lots happening in Ward 1 throughout the month of July, and lots of ways to stay involved.
