ICE Raids in Ward 1

I am proud that we are a sanctuary city and I strongly condemn these actions. Ward 1 and the District have a vibrant immigrant community and local law enforcement does not cooperate with ICE.

I know many of you will want to help. Several organizations in the community are working to support the detained residents. CAIR CoalitionAyudaCARECEN  and MLOV are looking for volunteers who will help answer phones, staff jail visits, or attorneys willing to represent people pro bono.

Additionally, advocates are organizing a rally this evening, Monday, July 16 at 5:30 p.m. in the Columbia Heights Civic Plaza at 14th and Kenyon St NW. I will be there to stand in solidarity with our immigrant residents.

As the Councilmember representing the most diverse ward in the District, I am committed to supporting our immigrant community. Just last week, I joined with elected officials from across the country in calling for the abolition of ICE due to its destructive impact on our communities. The Council also just passed and funded my bill to permanently fund free immigration legal services for low-income documented and undocumented immigrants.

I believe the diversity of the District is our greatest strength and I am committed to keeping the District a welcoming place for all. Each of us has a responsibility, now more than ever, to stand up for our neighbors who are vulnerable against hate and bigotry. I hope you will join me in my efforts and show your support to others.

Sincerely,

Brianne

New omnibus legislation from D.C. Councilmembers Brianne K. Nadeau (D-Ward 1) and Robert White (D-At-Large) would replace the existing Housing Production Trust Fund with a more robust and modern financing mechanism and add new tools to accelerate housing production.
I suspect you are just as frustrated at having to receive another one of these updates as I am to have to send it. I want to start by commending the people of Ward 1 for your immense patience and compassion following the major storm. With temperatures on the rise I am optimistic that this will soon be behind us.
In the past two budgets, the Council was presented with significant cuts, including the loss of eligibility for services, elimination of cost-of-living increases, and pay cuts for educators, and other critical services and supports.
