Regarding Ward 1 school visit by immigration

Yesterday, federal immigration agents visited H.D. Cooke Elementary School during school arrival time and attempted to detain a staff member there. Many of you have reached out to me and I share your concerns. Thankfully, everyone remained calm and knew their rights. They asked to see a warrant, and when agents could not produce one, the agents left. I commend the quick actions of those who worked to keep our community members safe.

DPW Oversight Remarks

DPW is one of the District’s most public-facing agencies, and one of the most important agencies in this committee. When DPW does its job well, there are fewer rats, fewer scofflaw vehicles on the street – cleaner, safer, and more vibrant neighborhoods.

The Recycling Refund and Litter Reduction Amendment Act of 2025 is major environmental legislation that would drastically reduce litter in streets, parks and rivers by placing a refundable 10-cent deposit on beverage containers sold in the District.

Empower is a ride-hailing company and must follow the rules of ride-hailing companies. What’s most important here is that riders and drivers will be protected from the unscrupulous practices of a business that thought it should be unaccountable to anyone.
