Statement on WCP Article on Bill That Would Allow Searches

My statement on the Washington City Paper article on Councilmember Brooke Pinto’s bill, the Addressing Crime through Targeted Interventions and Violence Enforcement (“ACTIVE”) Amendment Act of 2023

“I understand the concerns people have about the bill and I share those concerns. I look forward to a robust conversation about the civil liberties issues. Regardless of how I view the proposed legislation, I respect Councilmember Pinto’s good faith as a legislator.

“The City Paper should not have included and made references to Nazis in its coverage of the bill. Unnecessary and casual references to Nazis and the Holocaust are dangerous and painful for the Jewish people and others persecuted by them, and they are not helpful to a productive debate.”

We are now almost two weeks out from one of the most challenging snow events I have seen as a Councilmember, with its unique mix of snow, sleet, and below freezing temperatures. Residents have been understandably frustrated by District government’s response to the storm.
The normal DPW collection schedule will resume tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 2, for frontside collection households.
It’s been a difficult week & I’m glad to see that DPW is resuming trash pickup & making progress on removing snow on more streets, including many side streets in Ward 1.
