Hello Neighbors:
We have some important updates on trash and recycling collection.
Some residential trash and recycling collection will resume tomorrow, Saturday, Jan 31.
- If your trash and recycling are usually picked up on Mondays from the front of your home, please have your bins out by 6 am tomorrow (Saturday) for pickup.
- If your trash and recycling are usually picked up on Tuesdays from the front of your home, please have your bins out by 6 am Sunday, Feb. 1, for pickup.
- If your trash and recycling are usually picked up on Mondays or Tuesdays from your alley, the District Snow Team is working this weekend to clear pathways in alleys so they can resume regular collection on your usual day.
- Plans for next week’s collections will be confirmed Sunday evening. Check the DPW website for updates.
Food waste collection remains suspended at this time. Updated information will be available as conditions improve.
Other storm-related updates
Bus stops. National Guard personnel are clearing pathways to WMATA bus stops and Safe Passage teams are helping clear crosswalks and sidewalks near schools.
Unplowed streets. Please continue to flag streets that need attention by calling 311 (you cannot report unplowed streets on the app) and our office.
Sidewalks. As a reminder, property owners are responsible for clearing the sidewalks in front of their homes. Starting Monday, the District will resume enforcing penalties for uncleared sidewalks. If you are a senior or have functional or access needs, you can sign up to have a volunteer Snow Hero deployed to shovel for you. Thank you to everyone who diligently shoveled your own walks and have assisted others.
It’s been a difficult week and I’m glad to see that DPW is resuming trash pickup and making progress on removing snow on more streets, including many of the side streets in Ward 1. I want to give a shoutout to the hardworking city workers and WMATA workers on the front lines, from plow operators to mechanics and bus drivers, first responders, and many more.
