Our fight to hold Empower accountable continues

WARD 1 UPDATE

Hello Neighbors:

I am passionate about Ward 1 and could not be prouder to be your Ward 1 Councilmember. I will always advocate for our ward, our residents, and especially the most vulnerable of our neighbors.

With the two-year Council Period 25 coming to a close, I’m excited to share with you some of what we’ve accomplished. Watch your inbox next week for my 2024 Progress Report – a look back at how we worked to enhance road safety, build more affordable housing, expand violence prevention programs, and more.

The New York Times featured our fight to hold Empower accountable. There’s a reason that the completely unregulated ride-hailing company operating illegally in D.C. is so cheap: riders are not protected and may be putting themselves at risk. My investigation continues as we work to keep people safe, and the District Attorney General continues to pursue court action.

Last week, Councilmembers voted unanimously to recommend that the D.C. Council expel Councilmember Trayon White for violations of the D.C. Code and D.C. Council Rules, presenting a serious threat to the public trust. Serving on the Council is a privilege and a solemn responsibility, demanding the highest standards of personal and professional conduct. The full Council will hold a hearing in January and take a final vote shortly after. Read my full remarks.

As we prepare for 2025, I’m excited for the start of a new Council Period, full of new opportunities and challenges to make Ward 1 and the District even more vibrant, livable, and equitable.

To follow along in the new year, come join us on BlueSky.

COUNCIL UPDATES

Council passes two bills to crack down on road safety violations

We’re taking action against cars with fake tags, that often drive (and park) dangerously with no consequence. And food delivery vehicles that double park, drive dangerously, and interrupt traffic.

The Council, at its final legislative meeting of the year, gave final passage to two bills I introduced that would increase safety on D.C. roads.

The first gives the Department of For-Hire Vehicles enforcement and regulatory authority over food and parcel delivery services, especially enforcement of traffic laws, to ensure that carriers-for-hire are accountable to the rules of the road.

The second bill would allow DPW parking enforcement to immediately tow and impound vehicles with counterfeit or obscured license plates and temporary tags. Premeditated reckless driving is often associated with vehicles that have counterfeit tags, making this legislation even more urgent as one of the tools we can employ to make our roads safer for residents and visitors.

Girl Scouts came to testify on my bill to ceremonially name “Girl Scout’s Way”. Girl Scouts always lead the way! I know because I’m a lifelong Girl Scout and a Brownie troop leader. I’m looking forward to making the street naming official next year. Good job girls!

Thanks WMATA for bringing the holiday bus to Columbia Heights!
