Statement from Councilmember Nadeau on Excessive Use of Force by Metro PD Officer
Last week, the Council took an important vote on the budget that will set the direction for DC’s spending next year. It contains some significant wins for Ward 1 and on my priorities of addressing homelessness, supporting small businesses, building affordable housing, and keeping our communities safe. Below are highlights, but please feel free to get in touch with my office if you would like more detail on funded items.
Today, Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduced the Vote by Mail Amendment Act of 2019 which requires the Board of Elections (BOE) to offer paper ballots for all elections to be mailed or dropped off at designated locations, in addition to allowing people to vote in person. The legislation is aimed at making voting easier and increasing voter participation across the District. In addition to Nadeau, the bill is co-introduced by a majority of the Council including Councilmembers Charles Allen, Mary Cheh, Robert White, Jr., David Grosso, Anita Bonds, Kenyan McDuffie, and Jack Evans. WASHINGTON – Today, Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau celebrated securing $1 million for Ward 1 public housing repairs in the FY20 budget passed by Council this week. An amendment, written by Nadeau and At-Large Councilmember Elissa Silverman, was included in the budget to redirect funds that had been set aside for the Line Hotel’s tax abatement toward public housing repairs in Ward 1. The amendment comes after the District’s Attorney General confirmed that the hotel was not eligible for the abatement after it did not meet the law’s local hiring requirements.
At the May 7th, 2019 Legislative Meeting, the Vision Zero Enhancement Omnibus Amendment Act of 2019 was introduced. The bill, among other things, does the following:
Today, along with Councilmembers Grosso, Cheh, and Silverman, Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduced a Sense of the Council resolution to oppose the State of Maryland’s Highway Widening Plans, and advocate for public transit as a solution to our region’s congestion.

WASHINGTON – Working to provide better access to social services, Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduced a bill today that would provide on-site services for residents in certain multi-unit buildings. The On-Site Services Act of 2019 is supported by a majority of Council. It was co-introduced by Councilmembers Trayon White, Kenyan R. McDuffie, Elissa Silverman, Robert C. White, Jr., David Grosso, Mary M. Cheh, and Anita Bonds, and co-sponsored by Councilmembers Charles Allen and Vincent Gray.
