Housing & Homelessness

How we treat our most vulnerable communities is a measure of how well the District is doing. As chair of the Council’s Human Services Committee for six years, I spearheaded legislation and pushed for funding to ensure a path to safe and affordable housing for every District resident, including through my amendment to the Homes and Hearts Act in 2021, which made more than 2,400 housing vouchers available, enough to end homelessness in the District.

Far too many of our residents struggle with excessive housing costs and displacement. Unless we preserve and build new affordable housing, the District’s growth will come at the expense of pushing out low-income families and people of color, particularly the communities that have made Ward 1 so vibrant and resilient.

Today, with my support, the D.C. Council voted to approve the District’s budget for the next fiscal year. We will vote one more time before the budget is final. The new fiscal year begins in October.

The Council worked hard to enhance the Mayor’s budget, and as the new chair of the Committee on Human Services I’m proud of the work I did to prevent homelessness and support those experiencing homelessness. There are also great victories for Ward 1.

Councilmember Nadeau recently held a Ward 1 Community Conversation, which was a chance for residents to help set her legislative agenda by speaking with her and her staff about important issues and potential solutions.

Residents broke out into small group conversations with the Councilmember and her staff and each group was based on a specific topic area including:

This week marks a milestone in the Council’s annual budget process. Each committee holds a budget markup, which is when the committee makes its official budget recommendation for the following year.

This year I became Chair of the Human Services Committee where I help combat homelessness, improve programs for our youth that prepare them to succeed, and help residents with disabilities and those who find themselves in need of the District’s social safety net.

Chair of Human Services Committee introduces bill to ensure families are not pushed into homelessness

Washington – As part of her commitment to ensure children in the District aren’t at risk, today Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduced legislation that extends TANF benefits to ensure families living on the edge aren’t forced into homelessness and no children are at risk because their family loses TANF. The bill is based on the consensus recommendations of the TANF Hardship Extension Policy Working Group, a broad coalition of providers, advocates, customers and lawmakers who met last year to

The Committee is responsible for holding annual performance oversight hearings in February and March for all District agencies in the Committee's portfolio. Below are the pre-hearing questionnaires sent by the Committee to the agencies in advance of their oversight hearings. They will be updated as they become available.

Given his interest in managing the affairs of the District of Columbia, today Ward 1 DC Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau invited Congressman Jason Chaffetz to join upcoming performance oversight hearings of the D.C. Council Committee on Human Services, which she chairs.

As the committee’s guest, he would have the opportunity to join District Councilmembers in asking tough oversight questions of D.C. agency directors and public witnesses. She will keep a seat reserved for him.

Task force would create plan to provide dignified facilities for homeless residents and others

WASHINGTON– In an effort to provide dignified facilities for residents experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable populations, Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau introduced legislation today that would create a plan for the District to provide public restroom facilities, and create incentives for businesses that make restrooms available to the public. Nadeau is the Chair of the Human Services Committee which has oversight of the Interagency Council on Homelessness. The bill was co-introduced by Councilmembers Grosso, Silverman, White, Allen, and Bonds.

Yesterday marked a flurry of activity at the DC Council as it convened for the last time before newly elected members join next year. As Council Period 21 comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Ward 1 Councilmember. The past two years have been a privilege, allowing me to come to work every day and fulfill my passion.

Here’s what I’ve been up to:
