Education, including Early Childhood Education

A stable, secure, and productive school environment has a profound influence on children, particularly those at risk of not realizing their full potential or engaging in potentially harmful activities. When our schools, educators, and students do not receive the tailored support they require, turnover rates for teachers and principals rise, student attendance declines, and we fall short in preparing our youth for adulthood, causing ripple effects and far-reaching consequences across our city.

If we want to fight pervasive truancy, prevent crime, fill District jobs with District residents, and help our students succeed, then we must prioritize educator and student wellness, both financially and emotionally, in early childhood, adult education, and at every level in between.

Yesterday marked a flurry of activity at the DC Council as it convened for the last time before newly elected members join next year. As Council Period 21 comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Ward 1 Councilmember. The past two years have been a privilege, allowing me to come to work every day and fulfill my passion.

Here’s what I’ve been up to:

Supporting a revised, fiscally responsible plan to close down D.C. General

Today with my support the D.C. Council passed a revised plan to close the District’s crumbling central homeless shelter, D.C. General, and replace it with smaller temporary housing in all eight Wards. The Council’s revised plan responds to residents’ concerns and is much more fiscally responsible than the Mayor’s original plan.

Legislation from Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau will help protect environment, ensure good management of school sports programs

WASHINGTON – Two pieces of legislation introduced today in the D.C. Council will formalize the management of interscholastic sports in the District, and will oppose offshore oil and gas development in the region, including the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The legislation was introduced by Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau.

Supporting Paid Family Leave

CQpQrOkUEAEPqeM_(150x115).jpgI recently co-introduced a bill that would give workers in the District up to 16 weeks of paid leave for a major life event such as birth or adoption of a child or caring for a sick or injured family member or for self-care. The bill would allow any employee in D.C., or any D.C. resident employed outside of the city, to access a government-run fund to cover the costs of the paid leave. The best-in-the-nation bill would help keep families healthier and workers happier while helping businesses increase employee

SYEP students

This summer, our office hosted DCPS students Isaiah and Blondell for 6 weeks of work experience as part of the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. They got an inside look at how the Council works, and helped us keep the office running smoothly. They also worked with our star summer intern Iain to write a Ward 1 Youth Newsletter with information about the ward and the people who live there.

Dear Friends --

As a new Councilmember, I set out to ensure that in my first budget vote today, I would not only have a deep understanding of what the budget contained, but also that I would have an impact on its contents. I sought to strike a balance between the specific needs of the constituents of Ward 1 and all of those I represent across the District. For the first several months on the job, I dedicated hours to oversight hearings, ensuring I could understand first-hand the voices of all those impacted by the work of our

It's hard to believe it's already been 100 days since I took office. I am taking a break from budget oversight hearings to give you a quick update on what we've accomplished and how I'm working to keep my promises to the people of Ward 1.

This week, I cast the deciding vote to oppose a contract that would have allowed Corizon Health to provide health care services to DC inmates. I opposed the contract due to the for-profit company’s deeply troubling track record on patient care.
