A stable, secure, and productive school environment has a profound influence on children, particularly those at risk of not realizing their full potential or engaging in potentially harmful activities. When our schools, educators, and students do not receive the tailored support they require, turnover rates for teachers and principals rise, student attendance declines, and we fall short in preparing our youth for adulthood, causing ripple effects and far-reaching consequences across our city.
If we want to fight pervasive truancy, prevent crime, fill District jobs with District residents, and help our students succeed, then we must prioritize educator and student wellness, both financially and emotionally, in early childhood, adult education, and at every level in between.
Aiming to reduce the District’s infant mortality rate, last week Councilmember Nadeau introduced a bill that will provide all new parents in the District with a “Baby Box.” The boxes encourage safe sleep practices by serving as a bassinet for infants and will come with essential items for new parents. The bill is modeled after a recent statewide initiative in New Jersey and a long-time program in Finland. A majority of Councilmembers have signed onto the bill.

Today, with my support, the D.C. Council voted to approve the District’s budget for the next fiscal year. We will vote one more time before the budget is final. The new fiscal year begins in October.
The Council worked hard to enhance the Mayor’s budget, and as the new chair of the Committee on Human Services I’m proud of the work I did to prevent homelessness and support those experiencing homelessness. There are also great victories for Ward 1.
