Ward 1 Youth Newsletter – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau
This summer, our office hosted DCPS students Isaiah and Blondell for 6 weeks of work experience as part of the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. They got an inside look at how the Council works, and helped us keep the office running smoothly. They also worked with our star summer intern Iain to write a Ward 1 Youth Newsletter with information about the ward and the people who live there.

Bike Lane Priorities for Ward 1 – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau
The District should focus on filling specific gaps in the bike lane network and should build more protected bike lanes, according to a letter sent today from Ward 1 DC Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau to District Department of Transportation Director Leif Dormsjo. Nadeau, an advocate for expanded bicycling infrastructure since her time as an ANC, developed the list of Ward 1 priority projects in consultation with District bicycling advocates. Nadeau Statement on Incident in Columbia Heights – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau
WASHINGTON — In response to shots fired this afternoon at the park located at 15th and Girard Streets NW, Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau released the following statement:
“I can only imagine how upsetting this was for residents, especially families with children in the area.
“Immediately following this incident I spoke with the director of Parks and Rec, who relayed to me what steps they took to keep the children safe, and also what MPD is doing to pursue those involved. As weather gets nice over the summer we’ve noticed an uptick in these incidents and are working closely with MPD to address them. In addition to my regular communications with MPD about their efforts in Columbia Heights, my office is working to support community-police collaboration that focuses police attention on the area. We will also be holding a public safety walk with MPD in the area. In the long term, I am working to ensure MPD has the resources they need to prevent these kinds of incidents, while applying constant pressure on MPD so that they leave no stone unturned in their efforts to keep Ward 1 safe.
“There is nothing I can say to make you feel better about what happened today, I’m sure. But I want you to know I’m taking it very seriously, as is DPR and MPD.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, June 30, 2015

WASHINGTON — In response to news from Adams Morgan Main Street that it would cancel this year’s Adams Morgan Day Celebration, Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau released the following statement:
“I am very disappointed in this news. Adams Morgan Day is a celebration of what makes the community so unique. I have been in contact with organizers about how I can support their efforts to deal with the issues at hand and build a stronger organization in the future. Unfortunately, as the news reports show, the problem is larger than just money. There are irregularities that must be investigated and questions that need to be answered in order to move forward. I look forward to a speedy investigation so that the organizers can move forward with planning an even stronger celebration next year.”

Ward 1 Update: My Vote Today: Budgeting with Values – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau
Dear Friends —
As a new Councilmember, I set out to ensure that in my first budget vote today, I would not only have a deep understanding of what the budget contained, but also that I would have an impact on its contents. I sought to strike a balance between the specific needs of the constituents of Ward 1 and all of those I represent across the District. For the first several months on the job, I dedicated hours to oversight hearings, ensuring I could understand first-hand the voices of all those impacted by the work of our District agencies.
New construction inspectors, Pepco-Exelon merger – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau
Fighting back against illegal construction, bad landlords
As part of my work on the Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs Committee, I proposed funding fortwo new illegal-construction inspectors and a new permit inspector at DCRA in next year’s budget. These new inspectors will allow DCRA to investigate illegal construction and better respond to complaints, including those received after hours and on weekends, as well as speed up its processing of permits, which will benefit new businesses and businesses trying to expand who are often held up waiting on permits.
Working with Councilmembers Silverman and Allen on the same committee, we also proposed funding for two additional attorney positions for the Office of the Tenant Advocate to protect the interests of renters, who make up the majority of DC residents. The lawyers will help tenants stay in their homes, purchase their buildings and preserve affordable units for the future. With the additional two attorneys, they are expected to be able to advise an additional 30 clients per week.
