DC Council Condemns Anti-Muslim Bigotry – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Resolution from Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau expresses solidarity with Muslims amid escalation in rhetoric by political figures

WASHINGTON – Reacting to an alarming increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric this election season, members of the DC Council unanimously co-introduced a resolution today condemning anti-Muslim bigotry and expressing solidarity with Muslims and all those targeted for their ethnicity, race or religion. The resolution, authored by Ward 1 DC Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau, was inspired in part by the experience of her Jewish ancestors in Europe who faced anti-Semitism.

More community office hours – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Community Events
More opportunities to meet me in the neighborhood

It’s been a busy summer. Over the last several weeks I’ve held community office hours in neighborhoods across the ward and welcomed Ward 1 families and seniors to Ward 1 Day at the Building Museum and at Nationals Park.

But that’s not all! I’ll be holding more community office hours this coming week and later in August. Drop by to meet and chat about neighborhood issues.

Addressing Public Safety in Columbia Heights – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Everyone deserves to feel safe in the neighborhood they call home. I’m working hard to address public safety in Columbia Heights, including bringing two new programs to keep the area cleaner, safer and thriving.

Last week I shared a message on neighborhood email lists about public safety that provided ways to stay on top of information and in touch with the police as well as some additional information about all we are doing to combat crime.

Public Safety Update – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

This has been a difficult week both nationally and in Ward 1. Our hearts go out to the victims of the Orlando shootings, whose lives were tragically cut short by gun violence targeting the LGBT and Latino community. Closer to home, on Tuesday there were two separate violent incidents involving guns, just blocks apart on 14th Street – one young man killed in the 2900 block of 14th St and two young men shot at Girard and 14th. Yesterday MPD also responded to a fight involving youth at 14th and Irving. I know many Ward 1 residents are concerned about these incidents, whether you live, work, visit or commute through Columbia Heights. As a resident of Columbia Heights on 14th Street myself, I understand how upsetting this is.

Council votes on revised shelter plan, DC’s annual budget – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Supporting a revised, fiscally responsible plan to close down D.C. General

Today with my support the D.C. Council passed a revised plan to close the District’s crumbling central homeless shelter, D.C. General, and replace it with smaller temporary housing in all eight Wards. The Council’s revised plan responds to residents’ concerns and is much more fiscally responsible than the Mayor’s original plan.

email1a.jpgAs you may know, I have been supportive of the overall plan to replace D.C. General with smaller shelters, and supportive of the site selected for Ward 1 since it was first proposed. I believe that these neighborhood-based shelters are a giant step forward in changing the lives of the poorest children in our city, and helping their families to access some of the prosperity the District has been enjoying.

Ward 1 Public Safety Meeting Recap – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Last week I held an event on public safety to bring together the Metropolitan Police Department, youth serving organizations and neighbors before summer begins. The goal of the meeting was to make sure residents are connected to all that the DC government, its partners and I are doing in our community to keep them safe. We had more than 70 residents at the event, as well as Police Chief Cathy Lanier and representatives from each of the Police Service Areas in Ward 1 which are divided between MPD’s 3rd and 4th Districts.

Below you’ll find highlights from the presentations, including how MPD is preparing for the summer, and questions from residents, including questions about loitering, police jurisdiction at Metro stations, how to report drug dealing and security cameras.

Ward 1 Public Safety Event: April 27th

picture_1.jpgBefore summer gets underway, I will be holding a Ward 1 Public Safety Event on Wednesday, April 27th at 6:30-8:30pm at Banneker Recreation Center (2500 Georgia Ave NW) for residents to get to know the police teams serving Ward 1 neighborhoods and ask questions about issues in your community.

In addition to the local MPD teams, Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier will be joining us to share updates about the work MPD is doing, as well as other leaders working to ensure public safety in Ward 1. We hope you will be able to attend and help us spread the word!
