New Main Street and Clean Team will Help Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant Thrive

This week I officially launched the District’s newest Main Street organization which will cover Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant. I secured funding for the organization because it will grow our small businesses, build a stronger community, and allow both Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights to thrive in their own unique ways.

In addition, I recently secured funding for and supported the expansion of the Ward 1 Clean Team, which will now bring additional resources to keep Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant cleaner as the neighborhoods continue to grow. I also secured $250,000 for gang violence prevention activities in Ward 1, which will go to local nonprofits working with youth.

Council Wrap Up, New Committees – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Yesterday marked a flurry of activity at the DC Council as it convened for the last time before newly elected members join next year. As Council Period 21 comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Ward 1 Councilmember. The past two years have been a privilege, allowing me to come to work every day and fulfill my passion.

Here’s what I’ve been up to:

Nadeau’s Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs Moves Quickly on Bills to Help Protect Residents – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau’s subcommittee works to protect tenants, crack down on poor construction, lower drug prices, reduce vacant properties

WASHINGTON – The D.C. Council’s newly formed Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs continued moving quickly to advance bills that help protect consumers and update outdated regulations with a markup yesterday. The subcommittee, chaired by Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau and formed in September, has held two hearings and two markups and moved nine bills, five of which have been approved by the Council and are headed to the Mayor for her signature. The remaining four bills are expected to be considered by the full Council in December.

Chair of the new Consumer Affairs Subcommittee

subcommittee.jpgI recently became the Chair of the newly created Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs, which has oversight of major DC agencies including those that help tenants, monitor insurance and banking companies, and enforce construction and housing regulations. I’m hitting the ground running. The Subcommittee will be holding its first hearing on October 20 at 9 a.m. If you would like to testify, please follow the instructions at this link

One of my major focuses is passing a bill I wrote that gives the Office of the Tenant Advocate more power to go after landlords who don’t maintain their properties. If you had to go to a hotel or rent a temporary room due to poor maintenance of your unit, OTA could go after your landlord for those temporary relocation costs.

I will also have the opportunity to move forward several bills that will crack down on vacant properties, an issue on which I hear from Ward 1 residents regularly.

This is one of several new subcommittees created to fill a gap after the recent departure of Councilmember Vincent Orange. Some of the major agencies overseen by the Consumer Affairs Subcommittee are the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking, and the Office of the Tenant Advocate.
