Bill Will Allow Non-Binary Gender Option on District Driver’s Licenses – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Councilmember Nadeau introduces bill to ensure gender nonconforming individuals can obtain accurate identification 

WASHINGTON – Today, Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduced a bill to allow District residents to select a non-binary gender option on their licenses, learner’s permits, or ID cards issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. The bill will allow residents to indicate their gender as non-binary, designated with an X instead of M or F. The bill was co-introduced by Councilmembers David Grosso, Robert C. White, Jr., Charles Allen, Elissa Silverman, and Mary Cheh. It was co-sponsored by Councilmembers Jack Evans, Anita Bonds, Trayon White, Sr., and Vincent C. Gray.

Nadeau Statement on Passing of Councilmember Jim Graham – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

WASHINGTON – Today, Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau issued the following statement following the news that former Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham passed away:

“I offer my deepest condolences to the friends and family of Councilmember Graham. It was no secret that we did not always see eye to eye, but there was no question as to his deep love for the people of Ward 1. As a Councilmember he leaves a legacy of fierce advocacy on behalf of District residents. As the director of the Whitman Walker Clinic his tireless work fighting for LGBTQ rights and to end HIV/AIDS was pioneering and touched lives across the District and around the country. In his many years of service, he was dedicated to leaving the world a better place than he found it. He will be missed.”

Council Budget supports paid family leave, strengthens social safety net, and expands education funding – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Today, with my support, the D.C. Council voted to approve the District’s budget for the next fiscal year. We will vote one more time before the budget is final. The new fiscal year begins in October. 

The Council worked hard to enhance the Mayor’s budget, and as the new chair of the Committee on Human Services I’m proud of the work I did to prevent homelessness and support those experiencing homelessness. There are also great victories for Ward 1.

Human Services Committee Budget Update – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

This week marks a milestone in the Council’s annual budget process. Each committee holds a budget markup, which is when the committee makes its official budget recommendation for the following year.

This year I became Chair of the Human Services Committee where I help combat homelessness, improve programs for our youth that prepare them to succeed, and help residents with disabilities and those who find themselves in need of the District’s social safety net.

Nadeau Resolution Honors Jewish Refugees Turned Away From the U.S. During WWII – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Remember the St. Louis Day is a reminder of the consequences of rejecting refugees in need 

WASHINGTON – The Council of the District of Columbia unanimously passed a resolution introduced by Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau that remembers Jewish refugees who were denied entry into the US during WWII and later perished in the Holocaust. The resolution designates May 13, 2017 as Remember the St. Louis Day, a reminder of the tragedy that comes with refusing to welcome refugees and those seeking asylum from war and persecution. Councilmember Nadeau will formally present the resolution to members of Washington’s Jewish community during the Council’s legislative meeting on May 2. She co-introduced the resolution with Councilmember Brandon T. Todd.

Nadeau Bill Protects TANF Benefits for District Families – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Chair of Human Services Committee introduces bill to ensure families are not pushed into homelessness 

Washington – As part of her commitment to ensure children in the District aren’t at risk, today Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduced legislation that extends TANF benefits to ensure families living on the edge aren’t forced into homelessness and no children are at risk because their family loses TANF. The bill is based on the consensus recommendations of the TANF Hardship Extension Policy Working Group, a broad coalition of providers, advocates, customers and lawmakers who met last year to recommend a path forward for the District’s TANF program. It is co-introduced by Councilmembers R. White, T. White, McDuffie, Silverman and Todd, and co-sponsored by Councilmember Allen.

Nadeau Bills Support the Health of D.C.’s Immigrant Population – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduces bills to make Alliance coverage easier to maintain, study mental health needs 

Washington – As part of her ongoing efforts to protect the District’s immigrant community, today Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau introduced legislation that makes it easier for immigrants to retain their health benefits through the District’s Alliance program, and that seeks to ensure the District has enough resources to treat trauma as families are separated and people continue to be prosecuted under the new administration.

Nadeau Bill Seeks to Eradicate Street Harassment – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Majority of D.C. Councilmembers sign onto effort to increase public safety 

Washington – Today, Ward 1 D.C. Councilmember Brianne Nadeau introduced legislation that aims to target and eradicate street harassment in the District through education, awareness, data collection and culture change. The Councilmember spearheaded the first-ever Council roundtable on street harassment in December 2015 to bring attention to an experience that is all too common for many District residents. The bill is co-sponsored by Councilmembers Silverman, Grosso, Allen, Evans, R. White, and T. White.
