Ward 1 Update: Controlling the rat population, more summer events announced – Office of Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau

Controlling rats in the District
The District’s rodent population has increased as a result of the mild winter, which has allowed more rodents to survive and reproduce. My office has received and responded to dozens of constituent rodent concerns this summer. For each of these calls, we have worked to ensure that these requests are addressed and that any rodent nests are treated accordingly. My Constituent Services team is able to address rodent concerns by working with the Department of Health Rodent Abatement Division to assist constituents with properties that have been treated and are still experiencing rats.

Modeled after successful California legislation, the bill is a vehicle for people to petition the court for a temporary extreme civil protection order where there is an immediate and present danger that the subject will cause injury to themselves or others. It allows police to immediately remove guns and prevents the subject of the order from legally purchasing other firearms for 14 days. After 14 days, the court will decide based on testimony and evidence if there is significant threat of harm to self or others to justify removing the firearms for a one-year period. The bill was co-introduced by Councilmembers David Grosso and Anita Bonds.
