U Street Neighbors:
Many of you know that I have been working to convene our executive branch partners this summer for an update on the Nightlife Taskforce. I’m pleased to share the following invite:
A Conversation with Assistant Chief Morgan Kane about Public Safety in the U Street Corridor and an update on the Nightlife Taskforce
Thursday, August 3, 6:30-8:00 pm
DC Housing Finance Agency

Chief Kane has also invited other government partners who are part of the Nightlife Taskforce.
I hope you will join us to learn more about the work all our government partners are doing around public safety in the U Street corridor. See below for some of my own updates.

U St.-Related Activities
- Last month Council passed the Prioritizing Public Safety Act
- I spoke with our new police chief last month on several issues important to Ward 1 and asked her to allocate additional police resources to U street.
- In June I submitted a formal letter of support for the WNA liquor license moratorium for the 1900 Block of 9th Street, NW.
- The U Street Safety Initiative is something I kicked off last summer. I brought in a consultant to get feedback from hundreds of residents and business owners on how to restore U Street’s vibrancy and end the violence. Here’s the report we put out at the end.
- I have just secured funding in the budget to help us move forward with the recommendation to institute a place management entity, similar to a BID, for U street. Since even before my time on the ANC people have called for a BID in this area, knowing that without an organization to manage all the nightlife and daytime issues, there are too many gaps in services and supports. I supported efforts to form a BID several times, but they have not yet succeeded. With this effort the government will fund the entity so that it can get off the ground and do this work. An entity like this can help direct resources in the area, and manage the activity in the corridor.
- I introduced legislation to crackdown on fake tags earlier this summer. I expect the Council to take it up this fall.
